Consolidation Mining Company employed the miners in the George's Creek
area of western Maryland. Frostburg. was at the north end of the valley with
Westernport at the southern end. Clarence Powers and his brothers went into the
mines at age 13. It was dangerous work in damp conditions with long hours.
During our last conversation in 1972, he told me to learn about computers. His
words served me well.

The George's Creek mines were in the valley between Big Savage Mountain
and Dan's Mountain. The path of State Route 36 between Frostburg and Westernport
was settled by miners taking out the low-sulfur bituminous coal.
